Fatal accident near Cripple Creek

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Colorado 67 near milepost 57, approximately four miles north of Cripple Creek. The crash resulted in one fatality.
A 1989 Ford F150 was traveling south on Colorado 67 when the driver lost control of his vehicle on the icy, snowpacked roadway in a curve to the right. The Ford began rotating clockwise as it traveled into the northbound lane that was occupied by a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow in the process of snow removal. The Ford’s left side collided with the snow plow’s blade.
Prior to the collision, the snowplow had been driven onto the northbound shoulder in an attempt to avoid the Ford.
The Ford’s driver, a 23-year-old male from Divide, Colorado, was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his next-of-kin have been notified.  The driver of the plow, 40-year-old Timothy Kirtley of Florissant, was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.

At this time, alcohol and/or drug use is not considered to be a contributing factor in the crash. Investigators suspect the Ford’s driver was traveling at an unsafe speed for the road conditions.
