Colorado Highway Six accident involves state trooper

At approximately 3:34 this afternoon a Colorado State Trooper was injured while investigating a crash on Colorado Highway 6 near mile marker 269 in Gilpin County.


The Colorado State Patrol Trooper had just completed the investigation of a crash involving a vehicle that traveled off the roadway and down an embankment. The Trooper parked his 2013 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle in the eastbound traffic lane to stop the eastbound traffic as a tow truck began to recover the earlier crashed vehicle.  After eastbound traffic stopped,  a 1993 Ford Explorer traveling eastbound attempted to avoid a collision with an already stopped vehicle traveled onto the shoulder began to lose control.  The Ford Explorer struck the left rear of the patrol vehicle with its passenger side causing the patrol vehicle to travel forward striking the Trooper as he exited the vehicle.  The Trooper was struck with the door frame of the patrol vehicle.


The male trooper was transported to St. Anthony with moderate injuries and has since been released.


The driver of the 1993 Ford Explorer, David Kaai DOB 4/5/52 of Westminster, was uninjured in the crash.  Kaai was charged with Carless Driving Causing Injury and Defective/ Unsafe Vehicle.
